Sa Paper and Umbrella Handicraft Center

Hello again,

We went to an umbrella make factory this past weekend. I must have misunderstood because when we got there, I thought it was the silk making factory (which we went to later that day). As you can guess, they are very different processes.

They started by mashing the dry leaves with mallets and soaking the material in water.

Eventually the paper material will be placed in a giant vat of water where the screens can collect the material and once dry, become a sheet of paper.

In addition to making the paper, the stems of the umbrellas are also hand crafted. The paper umbrellas are assembled and weatherproofed.

All of the umbrellas are hand painted with beautiful artwork.

I did not even know an umbrella factory was a thing until now but it was interesting and amazing to see that every one of these umbrellas were handcrafted from the leaf to the paint.

Sawadee ka!
