Fai Bakery and Thai FDA

On November 16th we visited the delicious Fai Bakery of Thailand and had a guest lecturer from the Thai FDA at this location.

Our speaker was from the Consumer Protection Office within the Thai FDA. At our visit he reviewed the FDA role within the food industry in Thailand. The FDA is under the Ministry of Public Health and in addition to regulating prescription medications in Thailand, they also have a federal system established to monitor nutritional supplements and food production, which is unique compared to the United States.

What was interesting was that this system encourages good manufacturing practices in the food industry by allowing companies to get a certificate indicating that their food was produced in a safe and clean manner. Having this certificate, these companies can advertise that they have this approval to the general public, which in turn promotes and supports companies producing quality products.

Fai Bakery prides themselves in their facility and baked goods. They do not use preservatives and chemicals in their food and are known for their fresh breads in Thailand. Hearing how the FDA in Thailand plays a more active role in nutrition and food productive was an eye opening experience and I am happy to have learned about the FDA in this new light!

Warmly,

Natalie
