Chiang Mai’s Cafe Scene

This little city, nestled in the mountains of Northern Thailand, is a gem. With its canals and green spaces, Chiang Mai feels more approachable than Bangkok. In my spare time, it has been lovely to stroll around. exploring, or hitch a Songthaew (red truck) to where I want to go.

One of my favorite discoveries is the sheer volume of cafes packed into its narrow Soi (side streets). These establishments range from simple to chic, with a great deal of cuteness sprinkled throughout.

Like many graduate students, my coffee consumption is high, so I’ve had a lot of opportunities to check them out.

Some highlights from my favorites include:

Once Coffee and Beer -

A short walk from our hotel, this is located in a quiet side street, with a serene outdoor patio complete with a bubbling fountain. The owners are friendly and cold drinks come served in frosty glass mug - refreshing in the heat and humidity!

Somewhere Espresso -

This artsy nook could easily be found in Portland (of either coast), though many of its drinks have a unique Thai twist. Leave your mark on the brick wall, and check out the handcrafts sold and displayed throughout. A portion of the profits of the cafe go to help stray dogs!

Clay Studio -

Located in the older part of the city, the weathered terra cotta sculptures, lush greenery and fish pond feel as exotic as the locale of this walled courtyard garden. The menu of this cafe was a little more extensive and I highly recommend the mango & cream cheese toast.

Thaepae East -

Down a short alley, connected to a hostel, we stumbled upon this cafe at night. The sounds of a jazz band spilled out from inside it’s crowded space onto the open air patio, where a food vendor grilled delicious-smelling satay and sweet corn. We sat and played cards, while listening to the truly excellent music.
Cheers! -A.J.
