We had the opportunity to make our own Thai massage balls when visiting Chang Mai University. The students learn how to make these in their pharmaceutics course when learning how to compound. This massage ball was introduced about 200 years ago and was used for soldiers with muscle pain. It's also used in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. The herbs can vary but we used dried ginger, lime peel, lemongrass, privel leaves, plao yai leaves, tumeric, camphor leaves and tamarind leaves.
We start off with a peice of square cloth and place in the dry herbs mentioned earlier. Once we place the herbs in the middle we pull up the corners of the cloth and tie it with a string. This massage ball can be heated for about a minute and used in areas of pain or inflammation.
I really enjoyed our time with CMU! We were able to meet with the same students over several days. We got to know them well and made plans to hang out on the weekend. Unfortunately the plans dropped but I think we formed a bond. I hope to stay in touch with them!
